The Meadows Origin Story
In early 2023, we bought a building on Sheridan Street in Ely that many locals remembered as Hand Done T-Shirts. It had good bones but plenty of wear, and we knew it would take vision—and a lot of elbow grease—to make it into the kind of space we dreamed about. What we didn’t know at the time was how much history the building itself would teach us along the way. As we peeled back layers of flooring, paneling, and paint, we uncovered stories of Ely’s past and got to know the structure in an intimate way. Each stage of renovation became both a construction project and a conversation with the building’s history.
For almost a year, we poured ourselves into the renovation. We tore down walls to let the light pour in, created an open gallery space at the front, and designed a more private studio and workspace area in the back. We wanted to balance function and warmth—a place where art could be both shown and made, where community members could gather, and where the character of Ely itself could shine through. The result is a space that feels both rooted and new: eclectic, bright, and full of possibility.
As the dust started to settle, we began reaching out to local artists and makers. To our great joy, people said yes. They believed in us, believed in the vision of a shared creative hub, and brought their work into the space. From painters and ceramicists to woodworkers and jewelers, The Meadows quickly became a collective effort. We’ve often said that this space only exists because of the artists who fill it—our role is simply to hold the container and keep it welcoming.
On June 28, 2024, we opened our doors to the public. That first day was humbling and energizing: friends, neighbors, and community members walked through the gallery, admired the studios, and offered words of support. It felt like Ely had been waiting for this, and in turn, we felt so grateful to be part of this community. The Meadows is more than just a gallery or a shop—it’s a gathering place, a crossroads for creativity, and a living story that continues to grow with every person who steps through the door.
Looking back, it’s hard to believe how much transformation has taken place in such a short time. What began as an old building full of stories has become a new home for creativity, collaboration, and connection. We’re excited for the seasons ahead, for the art yet to be made here, and for the friendships and community ties that will continue to deepen. The Meadows is still young, but it already feels like it belongs—not just to us, but to Ely.
